Biceps Pain

Shoulder Pain Marpole Treatment
Recovery for Biceps Tendinopathy & Shoulder Pain
The biceps muscle is famous for its role in bending the elbow, but its most critical job often happens at the shoulder. The Long Head of the Biceps (LHB) tendon travels through a narrow bony channel at the front of your shoulder (the bicipital groove) to attach deep inside the joint.
Because of this tight fit, the tendon is highly susceptible to "fraying," inflammation, and chronic wear-and-tear. At Granville Physio, we use Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) to treat biceps pain that hasn't responded to traditional rest and ice.
Common Signs of Biceps Tendon InjuryPatients with biceps tendon issues often report:
  • Front-of-Shoulder Pain: A sharp or aching sensation directly at the front of the shoulder joint.
  • Pain with Lifting: Increased discomfort when carrying groceries, performing "bicep curls," or reaching overhead.
  • Tenderness to Touch: A specific "sore spot" at the front of the shoulder.
  • Weakness: Feeling like the arm "gives out" when trying to rotate the forearm or lift heavy objects.
How Shockwave Therapy Heals the Biceps TendonWhile a complete rupture requires surgical intervention, Shockwave Therapy is a gold-standard non-invasive treatment for partial tears and chronic tendinopathy. It works by "jumpstarting" the repair process in tissue that has stalled in its healing.
1. Stimulating Biological Repair (Mechanotransduction)The biceps tendon has a relatively poor blood supply, which is why "tendonitis" often turns into "tendinosis" (permanent tissue degradation). Shockwave changes this by:
  • Neovascularization: Stimulating the growth of new micro-capillaries to deliver oxygen and nutrients directly to the damaged tendon fibers.
  • Collagen Synthesis: Forcing the body to produce Type I and Type III collagen to physically "fill in" and strengthen partial tears.
  • Growth Factor Release: Accelerating the body’s natural regenerative proteins.
2. Rapid Pain Modulation
  • Nerve Desensitization: High-energy pulses provide a "hyperstimulation" effect, effectively numbing the overactive pain receptors at the front of the shoulder.
  • Substance P Reduction: Lowering the concentration of pain-transmitting chemicals, allowing for a faster return to daily activities.
3. Breaking Down Calcific DepositsIf your biceps pain is caused by Calcific Tendinitis (the buildup of "toothpaste-like" calcium), Shockwave is the most effective way to fragment these deposits. This allows your body to reabsorb the debris naturally, removing the physical "grinding" sensation in the joint.
Clinical Evidence: Why It’s the Superior ChoiceResearch consistently shows that ESWT is highly effective for the biceps:
  • Long-Term Success: A study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that patients with chronic biceps tendinopathy who received Shockwave therapy had significantly better pain relief and functional scores at 12 months compared to those who received only traditional therapy.
  • Avoiding Surgery: For many patients with partial tears or calcific deposits, Shockwave provides a successful alternative to invasive "tenodesis" surgery.

Get Back to Effortless MovementDon't let a "nagging" shoulder stop you from lifting, carrying, or staying active. At Granville Physio, we combine advanced Shockwave technology with a customized strengthening plan to restore your biceps tendon to full strength.
