Rotator Cuff Tear (Muscle Strain)

Targeted Recovery for Rotator Cuff Tears & TendinopathyThe rotator cuff is a specialized group of four muscles—the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor, and subscapularis. Together, they act as the dynamic stabilizers of your shoulder.
When these tendons are strained or partially torn, the shoulder loses its "centration," leading to a painful cycle of impingement, weakness, and nighttime discomfort. At Granville Physio, we use Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) to stimulate the cellular repair necessary to restore tendon integrity and get you back to your active lifestyle.
How Shockwave Therapy Heals the Rotator CuffRotator cuff tendons, particularly the supraspinatus, have a "critical zone" with naturally low blood supply. This makes traditional healing slow. Shockwave therapy changes the environment of the injury through:
  • Neovascularization (New Blood Flow): The acoustic pulses stimulate the growth of micro-capillaries in the tendon’s "watershed" zones. This increased blood flow is the "fuel" the tendon needs to repair partial tears and structural damage.
  • Collagen Synthesis: ESWT promotes the production of Type I collagen, the primary building block of healthy tendons. This helps "knit" damaged fibers back together and increases the tendon's ability to handle load.
  • Resolving Calcific Tendinitis: It is common for chronic rotator cuff issues to involve calcium deposits. Shockwave is the gold-standard non-invasive treatment for fragmenting these deposits, allowing the body to reabsorb them and eliminating the physical "pinch" in the joint.
  • Nerve Desensitization: By modulating pain-transmitting chemicals like Substance P, shockwave therapy provides a significant "window of opportunity" where you can perform strengthening exercises with much less discomfort.
Evidence-Based ResultsClinical research has shown that Shockwave Therapy is a highly effective alternative to more invasive options:
  • Superior to Cortisone: A study published in International Journal of Surgery (2017) found that for chronic rotator cuff tendinopathy, shockwave therapy provided more significant long-term improvements in pain and function compared to corticosteroid injections.
  • High Success Rates: Research consistently shows success rates between 65% and 91% for rotator cuff injuries, particularly when paired with a progressive strengthening program.
  • Functional Recovery: Studies indicate that patients who receive ESWT for partial-thickness tears show improved scores in the Constant-Murley Scale (a standard measure of shoulder function) after just 4 to 6 weeks.

Restore Your Strength. Reclaim Your Range. At Granville Physio, we combine advanced Shockwave technology with evidence-based rehabilitation. We don't just aim to reduce your pain; we aim to build a more resilient shoulder.
